Since 2012, Basel-based architect and art historian Tilo Richter has been contributing to the “M wie Münchenstein” series with guided tours and lectures. In 2024, a publication on ten selected topics related to Münchenstein was released—ranging from the Merian Gardens to the Schaulager. The 112-page brochure is available for free at the Trotte Münchenstein.
On September 4, nearly 30 interested residents of Münchenstein gathered at Müller Packaging’s headquarters at Tramstrasse 20. The Cultural Commission of the Municipality of Münchenstein had invited them to a guided tour as part of its “M for Münchenstein” event series. For more than 15 years, the Cultural Commission has been showcasing places and people from the municipality’s history through lectures and guided tours.
The visit to Müller AG Verpackungen was a special experience for everyone involved. First, Managing Director Roland Tanner introduced the Müller Group and its various companies. What was surprising was the current diversity of products and the fact that the Swiss production sites are manufacturing and expanding so successfully—now even as far as India. Yet it all began quite modestly in 1888 with a one-man sheet metal workshop in Kleinhüningen. In 1897, Rudolf Müller hired his first employee, a milestone considered the company’s founding. In 1922, the company moved to its current location in Münchenstein, and 14 years later, the sole proprietorship became a corporation. Today, the Müller Group employs approximately 400 people.
During a tour of the main production halls, guests were able to gain a firsthand impression of barrel production, from the raw steel coils to preparation for transport by the shipping company. Particularly impressive was the juxtaposition of state-of-the-art industrial robots and time-tested machines that have been in use at Müller for decades. The meticulous handwork also contributes to the quality of the products.
All the guests were familiar with Müller as a family-owned business in Münchenstein, now in its fifth generation. The exclusive tour of the production facilities, guided by three employees, will remain a fond memory for everyone. The Cultural Commission extends its heartfelt thanks to the Müller team for their hospitality and the delicious appetizers!
